I guess that's what makes it "alternate reality" - ALL possible situations exist.

Ah yes but what if in this reality we were warned and in the other reality we weren't? Or would that be two more alternate realities then? Ahhh should have less caffeine before posting - LOL.

When we went to that planet SG1 did find the marks that caused Teal'c to say that SG1 should leave immediately - basically the signs of an attack. So the Goa'uld had obviously been there, but as to why the note was not there, it's never really explained.

Ah yes but in alternate realities that is a good luck sign, saying "welcome all, Anubis lives here and is baking cookies, please come in" - ahhh more so than time travel, alternate stuff gives me a headache.

Buy why? It's not like there are that many Goa'uld running around the place to kill. All you'd end up doing is killing off a lot of Jaffa. And anyway, AR O'Neill ordered this in There but for the Grace of God and all it did was make it so that AR Teal'c had no interest in changing sides as his family had just been killed off - that and the Goa'uld then just kept dialling the earth gate so that nobody else could get to their alpha/beta site. That's how DJ ended up being injured by a staff blast when trying to escape.

So why is sending a large nuke through the gate the best solution? It doesn't stop the approach of the motherships towards earth. It doesn't stop any Jaffa landing force. In fact it does little to save earth at all. Better of using the gate to move people who can survive off world.

That's the problem with the military these days. They think blowing things up solves all our problems. Obviously, it doesn't. Blowing up Chulak only gets the Jaffa mad at us.

Ares is talking about the AR Teal'c in There but for the grace of God being really ticked with the AR O'Neill for having destroyed Chulak and killing his family. So even though AR O'Neill was trying to talk to him, AR Teal'c ends up shooting him with the extra large tripod-mounted staff weapon. But it's not in this episode.

So back to this episode, as we should try and stay on topic. I thought that it was good. SG-1 all acting together to try and save earth from the Go'auld, despite the fact that this was against orders. Pretty good for season 1 finale anyway.

Structurally speaking, the beginning and ending of stories are much easier to get a handle on than the middle. If you think of a Stargate Sg-1 season as being one long story, it's going to have a better chance of starting or ending with a "bang"..literally and figuratively speaking.

It's the middle part that tends to get a bit muddled....
