Loved it!! One of the better episode I thought. Good to see some not so ancient culture I think. And the comedy, quite well done I thought. Wonder what happened when the aliens went back, did things continue as before. And also I'd like to point out this is ANOTHER race that can kick Goa'uld butt, there does seem quite a lot of them around actually.

Yeah she does have trouble with things that don't fit into her concept of science/physics/possibilities. I remember in Maternal Instinct (when Daniel lights the fire with his mind) that she was also very sceptical and wanted to look for hidden devices.
I guess a scientific mind is always like this, but I would have thought that a bright mind like hers would be more open to wider possibilities. |

I guess it comes down to how you define "scientific". Even in ep 6x21 Prophecy (no spoilers here) Sam says something about "that is not possible given our CURRENT UNDERSTANDING OF PHYSICS" which I took to mean things change. World was flat once so to speak. |

That's also shown out in our first contact with the Tollans. In SC's conversations with Narim, he doesn't go into details but tells her that many of her concepts of physics are incorrect. What we currently understand about physics is precicely that, what we currently understand about physics. Every year some new premise is discovered, and who is to know where we will be in 10 years time. Everything we think is true now could be thought of as rubbish.
So while I tend to look for a "rational" explanation for things myself, that doesn't mean that we'll always be able to find what we might accept as a rational answer in the traditional sense. |

anyone else find it weird that the natives made everything from trinium without any forges? sure they got refined trinium from the river, but it didn't come in the shape of arrowheads.

OMG poor Jack he got shot (again)
RDA really acts brilliantly Its good to see Sam in charge for once, she really got a chance to shine. Also, it shows that Jack and Sam are more similar than they'd care to admit- Doesn't "What big eyes you have" sound like a typical Jack responce. Maybe its a hole in charge responsibility- hey well it works |

i like when jack has a smaller part once in a while. it's nice to see some of the rest of the team. although Jack+Sam is right and sam sounds like jack in her sarcasm (this is not the only time, either)

One of the things that sets this episode apart from most others is that the SGC gets caught "with its hands in the cookie jar" as it were. When the military tries to lie to the Natives about the mining and get caught there is a price to pay. I remember Daniel and Jack having to admit as much to the aliens while everyone else was vanishing in flashes of bright light.
Can you imagine if the Native Americans here in the US had been allied to such aliens and caught the US government reneging on promises and lying to them? Sort of level the playing field a bit, wouldn't it? |

I couldn't get into this one. I don't think Tonanie (or however its spelled) made a very believable character. The only part I really liked was the end where Daniel was trying to get them to stop long enough to listen, and Kyah's response to the males (can't remember his name) comment about our word being worthless. "As would mine..."

Laid back enough to shoot a weapon blind without knowing who (or what) it would hit?
I did like Sam's response to his comment about not understanding the message: "Oh, we got the message..." |

I recently showed this episode to my lower level History students. It was a good way to reinforce their basic understanding of Native-American culture and respect for the land. The Science Fiction as pect was a little over their heads but we had a good discussion about Native-American tribal beliefs, clothing, and use of Totem Poles to tell their history. I was satisfied.
I like Toanie as well. We all could learn from him. |

I personally didn't think this was the greatest of episodes but an enjoyable one.
What the 'spirits' turned out to be was quite interesting. We have explored many different planets but very few species have been discovered and here we got too see something that wasn't human or humanoid, i should say. This post has been edited by ramuund: Jan 1st 2004, 4:48 AM |

Actually they are humanoid. A humanoid is a being that is relatively similar in body shape to that of a human. The spirits in their natural form were humanoid. Even the Unas are humanoid. Unless I have my science fiction facts (an oxymoron. heh.) all wrong....
I thought Tonane was adorable. This post has been edited by Osy: Jan 1st 2004, 8:18 AM |

He was adorable. And I loved the fact that these people didn't need us to save them. In fact, they are doing much better than earth in many ways. I liked that after all the worlds that now look to us for protection/technology/advise or advisors. We are turning into the social workers of the universe.
