I guess from the most recent episode we also see that the older stargates are less durable. An alien blast destroyed one of the gates. This wouldn't happen with a Milky Way or Pegasus gate.

The Universe gates always seemed to be more steampunkish - made from metals, rather than the stone-esque Naquadah. |

we learned long ago from orlin, that gates can be made with common household items in sam's basement, as well as the tolan making their gate without naquidah. i'm guessing since destiny pre-dates the gate network, it also predates the discovery of naquidah which was only a milky way element.
