so they just have a bunch of single cell like things like the human form replicators that form into whatever you want? isnt a hologram light?

No, replicators in SG1 aren't named by what they are, but by what they do. In Startrek, a replicator is a device that materialises matter. Similar to teh way that Thor created the weapon that Jack designed in season 8 to fight the replicators in SG1.
Here you can read about the Holodeck |

so, as long as you dont move more than a few feet, you're fine? otherwise you would hit the wall?

I just gave you a link. It will answer your questions, I know that the answer to that specific question was in there, because I checked, knowing that you would ask it. If you wont read the resource, why should anyone answer your question?

what i got out of it is that theres forcefields of all the stuff that move with you, so only one person can be in the room at a time, otherwise, if you get more than a few feet from the other person, you woudl run into a wall, because you cant be greater than the width of the room away from the other person

If you wont read the resource, why should anyone answer your question? This quote is directly from the WIKIPEDIA page that is linked above. The 'Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual' is listed as the source. QUOTE The feel of a large environment is simulated by suspending the participants on force fields which move with their feet, keeping them in one place (a virtual treadmill). Perspective is retained through use of sound damping fields and graviton lenses, which make objects, people, and sounds appear to be more distant. The effect is an ultra-realistic simulation of an environment, with which the user can interact. This post has been edited by JTMAG1: Apr 16th 2007, 12:24 AM |

so, if one person moves, the other is taken with them? what if one person stands still and the other moves/ the whole scene cant move, so the one moving would run into the wall would they nto?

how can a person interact with a beam of light in that room? Force fields are used for some things, other things are actually created molecule by molecule... water, for instance. I imagine the floor is a projected force field, so people stay in the center of the room, and never run into the walls or each other, since each of their perspectives, if they aren't together, would have to be created. |

A 3 dimensional moving object is made of essentially 3 components. The replicator generates material into the proper shape. Weak tractor beams moving the object around, and the visual appearance is created with a hologram.
Revan, you are correct about the perspectives. They use graviton lenses to create the illusion of distance. Sound is also dampened. |

i can understand the part wehre the force feilds move around you, but what about if there is more than one person? you cant simulate distance when you are right next to a person

Unless you put a hologram between you and the other person that scales your view of the other person.
And a little off-topic, but I was just thinking about this the other day. If we actually had this technology, what do you guys think the real use of it would be? Do you think more people would spend time playing games, or acting out novels... or woudl most of it be "Other" uses? This post has been edited by Janos: Apr 16th 2007, 1:49 PM |

so, you're saying that you could be holding hands with a person, but what you see is that they are 100 yards away from you?

Well... why the hell would you need to simulate distance between people if they're supposed to be close. If they're holding hands, then no. If you're playing catch, then yes.
It's not that complicated. |

so, you're saying that you could be holding hands with a person, but what you see is that they are 100 yards away from you? Like Janos said, it's not that complicated. Think of a graviton lense like a lense. A lense that can be used to make things appear bigger or smaller. Like the lense on a camera, that can zoom in/out. These lenses are placed in front of individuals to make things appear at different distances. It's child's play. |
