Here's the press release from MGM: (with plot details in Spoiler tags for those of you who may want to skip them.)
MGM Greenlights New Stargate Movies Studio Continues Record Breaking Franchise by Releasing “Stargate: The Ark of Truth” and “Stargate: Continuum” LOS ANGELES–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc. (MGM) announced today the extension of the hit “Stargate SG-1” franchise with two movies based on the popular series. Titled “Stargate: The Ark of Truth” and “Stargate: Continuum”, the movies will both be made available to the television universe and home entertainment marketplace by MGM. The announcement was made by Charles Cohen, Senior Executive Vice President, MGM. “`Stargate SG-1’ is to MGM Television what the ‘James Bond,’ ‘Pink Panther’ and the ‘Rocky’ franchises are to our feature film unit,” said Cohen. “We are committed to continuing to release new SG-1 content and its `Stargate Atlantis’ spin-off, and we’re also steadfast in our dedication to extending the franchise. ‘Stargate’ is an indelible brand for MGM and we will support it well into the future.” With its high quality production values, long-term stability in the show’s leadership and strong chemistry between the lead actors in the series, all of whom have big audience appeal, “Stargate SG-1” is the longest-running science-fiction series in U.S. TV history. The series has a strong worldwide fan base and can be seen in over 120 countries. “Stargate SG-1” cast members Ben Browder, Amanda Tapping, Christopher Judge, Claudia Black and Michael Shanks are confirmed to star in both movies. Written and produced by Brad Wright and Robert Cooper, the new movies will feature the latest visual and sound effects, providing viewers with a theatrical movie-going experience. In the first movie, “Stargate: The Ark of Truth” will bring a conclusion to the primary storyline of the past two seasons of the SG-1 television series. More thrills and action-packed scenes are planned for this special event movie, which will be directed by Cooper. The suspense will end as fans will see the conclusion of the epic Ori saga. In the second movie, “Stargate: Continuum” the SG-1 team is now free to embark on new and exciting adventures throughout the endless Stargate universe. The first movie sounds sweet, I figured a long time ago that they'd have to travel to the Ori galaxy, wonder if the Sangreal has any part of the Ark or if it turned out to be useless? Idk about them traveling to the Ori galaxy to find this thing, sounds more like a trap unless its something the Ancients left there and the Ori have never heard of it, but whatever, should be good.
The second movie sounds interesting, cant wait to hear more on that one. |

from the synopsis of the second movie it sounds similiar to mobius only this time Baal changes the time line. I like that they are goingback to when the goald where in power. I also like that they are bringing back Baal. He's such a good bad guy. depending on how far back they go they could bring back a host of the goa'ld that we've seen in stargate eg apophis, sokar, ect

Can't wait for both films, bigger budget and longer viewing time should be good.
» Click to Show Spoiler « Also sounds like MGM are not giving out on the Stargate franchise or on SG1, does this add weight to the third series rumour or even more SG1 projects!?!?! heres hoping....... |

TPTB have said that their budget isn't huge. They said that they can do a lot with only a little cash so don't expect these to contain blockbuster SFX.

knowing how cryptic ancients are.. whats the bet the ark of truth is some sort of historical document?
ie like what the 10 commandments is kept in or something... maybe holding the real truth of the ori, or what the religion should be about. or some message. that would definitly stop the ori armies.. This post has been edited by Lagger: Jan 17th 2007, 11:31 PM |

Sorry, the second story sounds boring and unimaginative. There's simply isn't anything new there, and that's pretty sad.
» Click to Show Spoiler « Let's have something new to keep the franchise going, or as MGM says 'We are committed to continuing to release new SG-1 content...' If it's the same old stuff, it spells "The End."HP |

Hmm... I have to say, the first of the movies does indeed sound quite interesting and something I look forward to seeing, but I'm not too sure about the second one.
It seems like a re-visitation of Mobieus all over agan. |

It seems like a re-visitation of Mobieus all over agan. Well, 1969 was good. It was just too early in the show for them to remember any kind of Continuity by Season 10. So, they can write a Time Travel episode without making it suck. It IS possible. (Course, they have new writers now... so, that theory can go right in the toilet.. we'll see what happens!) |

The first one sounds awesome!
I'm not quite sure about the second one though. It sounds a lot like Moebius, and Moebius was weird. |

QUOTE The difference between 'Continuum' and 'Moebius' is that in the movie it is our SG-1 that is featured (three-fifths at least). The majority of 'Moebius' focused on an alternate SG-1 saving our SG-1. Oh. I thought it was the same people and that only the timeline had been altered and that things that had happened never hapened. |

How strange...I thought I had posted here already. Personally, I can't wait to see the first movie. I hope they do release it this year, but like I said before, I'm still sad. This will be the first fall season without new SG-1 episodes to look forward to, and no matter how many movies they make, it will never make up for the loss of a weekly episode for seven months a year.
