It wasn't like Carter is in command until Reynolds gets back, becasue he is better suited to run things than her. She just couldn't leave to the cabin because Reynolds wasn't there to run the things in the absence of the top 3 officers.
They weren't so much pointing out why she was in command, they were pointing out why she wasn't at the cabin... Depsite rank, there isn't really anyone more capable of running the SGC than Carter, in the absence of the General |

I'm also wondering, just what the Ori are up to during these filler episodes? Bringing in more doom and gloom (hooray.) Well Reynolds is the only Colonel on base, and he is a Marine, not Air Force. Somebody will get promoted eventually I s'pose... Can't be Carter, she's jsut been promoted to Lt. Coonel two years ago. I dunno how long's Mitchell been a Lt. Colonel, but he's too young to have been at it long. Also, he says in the episoe (or is it Insiders?) that he can't command Carter cos they're the same rank - now that;s only possible if he got his Lt. Colonel jsut before Lost City. |

Well she went from a Major to a Lt. Colonel pretty quickly... |

It's entirely possible he has been Lt. Colonel for a long time but time served as a Lt. Colonel doesn't count towards seniority, they are both the same rank and hence they can't command each other. The rank of Lt. Colonel is usually given after 18 years of service Mitchell was born around 1969, making him about 37 so he is ahead of "the norm". The rank of Colonel is usually given after around 20 years of service but as Mitchell is "ahead", he could be eligible for promotion to full Colonel. |

Like Daf said, surely there can't be a gap in the ranks from Major General to Lt Colonel (which reynolds must hold because he can't have been promoted from major to full colonel in less than 5 years!) I'm sure Col. Dave Dixon was probably off world aswell. Also surely Siler is due for promotion after years being a crash test dummy.
