Sony has announced that new DVD sets of Stargate SG-1 will be released in slim packaging, similar to the Atlantis Season One set, according to TVshowsonDVD.com. The new sets will consist of 3 slim cases, instead of the 5 large cases in current sets. The existing sets (Seasons 1-8) will also be re-issued with the new slimmer cases, and a lower price.

Sony is said to be considering releasing the new cases for owners of the larger sets, but has not confirmed if this will be possible. We'll let you know as soon as we find out more information.

Here's a graphic that compares the size of the current SG-1 sets and the new slimmer packaging, as seen on the Atlantis set:

I don't know... it's a cool idea.. but it's also kind of nice to see an entire shelf taken up by all 8 Seasons of SG-1 rolleyes.gif

So Arcady they are not going to give out new DVD's to us only the cases that we can transfer our disks to? I would not mind that at all. I could slip an entire season into my laptop case if that happened.

I like the old ones better. The bigger boxes/cases look really impressive sitting in my entertainment center. Those skinny little things...ew. sick.gif

Yes, that is the general idea. However, Sony has not said if they will offer the cases by themselves, but they are considering it. And they won't "give out" anything; there would be some small fee for these I'm sure.

I'm sorry but why change after 8 seasons, i hate the idea of having 8 seasons of the big boxed set and season 9 and 10 in the slim cases, that would look stupid. They better offer the cases by themselves, i still like my stargate sg-1 packaging better than stargate atlantis, they look so much better. I guess that was just a comment nothing adding to the discussion sorry but i had to say something.

They are changing after 8 seasons because the technology has changed, and now it is much cheaper for them to create the new, "thin" cases.

Personally, I prefer the big ones. Nothing quite like looking at a 2 foot-long wall of Stargate DVDs to shock people ..

I would much rather have the smaller packaging. The giant casing takes up so much space on my entertainment center shelves, I am running out of room for my other DVD's. (And I don't have room for a DVD tower)

It is of my own opinion that Sony charges so friggen much for the boxsets to begin with, that if they do offer the replacement packaging, they shouldn't charge for it. Not after what we paid for the boxsets!

I mean, the MacGyver boxsets are 5 disks and Paramount is only charging $30something. Sony charges an extra $20something for the Stargate boxsets. As far as I'm concerned, I already paid for the replacement packaging and season 9! dry.gif Seriously, what is the extra $20 going towards? A DVD is a DVD. They cost the same to make. Why is Sony's so much more? Anyone know?

Well, my shelf is starting to run out right now. There are 8.1 seasons on the shelf. All in a row, that's 48 DVD's all in a row on one shelf. I for one wouldn't mind smaller cases. It would make the sets look smarter as well. Overall it doesn't really affect me but I think I would like it.

Are they being re-released for other regions too? I was thinking about starting to collect the Stargate boxsets but if they are being reissued then I'm waiting for a while.

Yeah, if money is involved, it's pretty much a guarantee that the UK will get the cases that cost less smile.gif

Well, the only way that they can make the cases available to the rest of the people who own the other DVD's is if they release 5-Disc cases. The new seasons are going to be 3-Disc cases. Now, if they re-master the DVD's for all the Seasons so that they fit into 3-Disc cases, then everyone who'd want those wouldn't be able to just buy the cases.

So, the point is, I would assume that since the DVD's are already mastered, they'd just release 5-Disc cases in the new style for the previous season. So, find 5-Slim cases and put them together, and then see if that fits in your DVD Tower. If it doesn't then you're probably out of luck.

... actually Janos, it sounds like they are having 2 cases with 2 disks in them, and 1 case with only 1 disk in it. So, still 5 discs, just alot less space in which they are stored.

So if I decide to buy season 9 (that's a big IF at the moment, though I'll probably break down and get it), I'm going to have to get the smaller version? What if I like and want the bigger casing? I'm trying to go for a sense of symmetry here, and if I have 8 (well, 7 at the moment) big boxsets and 3 or so small ones, that's gonna be unsightly, and I would prefer to have things looking as uniform as possible.

I guess what I'm trying to ask is will the new packaging be optional? It'll probably be too expensive to make both versions of the boxsets, wouldn't it? crying.gif

Well, they usually just put the new one out for new sets. But not always. They're simply trying to re sell the old ones. It may not necesserilly be something that applies to the new one. But it is a chance. I don't think we're really gonna know though until they release official information so it's probably best to just wait and hope for the best. It would annoy me in a way as well.
I don't see them making two versions of the same set though, that just wouldn't make sence from their POV.

You could just use my solution. Buy a 400 disc DVD changer, load it up with every season (plus about 300 movies) and put the cases in boxes in the basement. I haven't seen the cases in years.

Holey sh*t Arcady how much would something like that cost! blink.gif

Janos are you saying that our current DVD's would not fit into the slim cases? Why are they different sizes or something?

I didn't realize that it would be 2 DVD's per case like Hobo said.

But 5 Discs won't fit into 3 Cases unless they're special cases.

Shoot, if they don't release the cases in the UK, we could always trade cases with some of our UK brothers and sisters who want the slim cases biggrin.gif

Janos a lot of the DVD boxsets that I get now are the 3 vol. 5 dvd sets. They fit normal dvds. At least they do not seem to be special in anyway.

Damn That thing is mamoth! OK stupid question but does it play the dvds also? I do not have a DVD player at all. I can only play my stuff in my laptop.
