I'm sure some of you have noticed that we keep running out of bandwidth near the end of each month. As a result of this, I have decided to move the site to a dedicated server that provides more monthly bandwidth, and should be faster as well. This costs a bit more, but it will keep the site up through the whole month, without having to constantly monitor the amount of bandwidth used, so that I can purchase more if needed.
There is only one downside to this new server: The files (including all of the forum data) will have to be moved to the new server, and the IP address of the site will change, so it means that I will need to turn off users' ability to post new messages (on the current server) as this move takes place. The new server will have posting ability turned on, so if you see the forums but are unable to post, then that means you have hit the old server while we are in the process of moving the site. (I'll post a note here when the server is about to be moved.) I'll try to keep all of the website and existing forum messages available while the move is happening. You will not be able to use the PM system or some features until the move is complete. It should take 12-24 hours for the DNS changes to propagate through the internet. If you have any questions about the changes, please let me know. I don't want to keep people from using the site, but this move is necessary to keep the site running smoothly in the future. Technical details about the new server for anyone who would like to know: Intel Quad Xeon with 8192MB RAM Triple OC-48 redundant connectivity UPS and Generators for power backup Cisco GSR 12000 routers The site runs on Linux, and the content is produced on Macs. |

Update: the forums will go into read-only mode at 9 AM EST on Feb 4th (2 PM GMT). The server data will be copied right after that, and the new server will come online shortly after (it takes about 30 minutes to copy all of the data.) The domain will be repointed to the new server, which will have active forums. If you keep getting inactive forums, make sure you quit and relaunch your browser to clear the old site from the cache. The new site should be fully up and running by about 10:30 AM EST (3:30 PM GMT). The domain changes may take some time to propagate through the internet, so it may work at different times for different people.
I will post here again just before I take the forums to read-only mode. |

Update: Posting has been disabled. The files will be copied over to the new server at this time. I will update this again when the new server is live.
